Some goods require transport due to their specificity under certain conditions, including controlled temperature.
This type of transport requires carriers to comply with specific conditions, which should be observed throughout the transport.
Therefore, the „temperature-controlled”; option is by far the more costly transport option than a standard shipping container.
Goods transported at controlled temperature e.g. refrigerated
Goods requiring special conditions are mainly:
- food products (refrigerated included),
- medical products and medicines,
- chemical products
- electronics and building materials.
As a result of fluctuations and exceeding the minimum or maximum temperature during transport, these goods may change their properties and become completely unsuitable for further use, not to mention the possible occurrence of hazards in the form of e. g. a change in their chemical composition. It i salso very important when it comes to transportation of refrigerated.
Refeer and his role in sea transport and road transport
Transport services in controlled temperature conditions are performed using specialized isothermal bodies with a unit or refrigerated containers, so called reefers.
The issue of temperature fluctuations and changing atmospheric conditions is very important, especially in long-distance maritime transport. Cargo can exceed various climate zones many times over a period of more than 45 days. Reefer containers are used to transport goods that require controlled temperatures such as fruit, vegetables, fish and meat.
Container transport in controlled temperature mode is subject to strict security requirements, such as monitoring the temperature of goods at each stage by means of electronic devices.
Transport at a controlled temperature requires continuity of the original temperature. Therefore, the reefer container should be properly checked both before and during loading. It must be in good working order, dry, preferably odourless and in good general technical condition.
It is worth mentioning that apart from an appropriate temperature, it is very important in the case of some goods, especially fresh fruit and vegetables, to set additional parameters concerning appropriate ventilation or humidity level
In order to carry out the transport correctly at a controlled temperature, it is necessary to equip the means of transport and the load unit in the appropriate additional devices.
It is necessary to equip the vehicle with a semi-trailer unit, also known as a genset. Power generators used in the road transport of sea containers have been designed and built in such a way that they continuously and without maintenance supply the container chiller with electric energy. Gensets can be permanently fixed in a container semi-trailer or rented on the majority of container depots in our country.
On ships, the refrigerated container is connected to special electrical connections, which provide the unit with the electricity necessary to maintain the required temperature inside the container throughout the entire journey.
Ships have a limited number of places/connections for reefer containers, therefore it is worthwhile to book such a connection with the shipowner in good time.
Transport at a controlled temperature is carried out by maintaining the temperature in cooling or heating conditions. Depending on the specificity and properties of the goods, the product can be cooled down to as low as -25 degrees C or heated and maintained at a temperature of +25 degrees C. Cargo insurance of goods transported under controlled temperature conditions is not more expensive than cargo insurance of goods transported under conditions without temperature determination.
The topic of controlled-temperature transport will be extended by further thematic articles, which will soon be published on our website.
